So many levels

I’m making spaghetti squash for dinner. I cut the squash open and find that it smells like pumpkin inside, which is not surprising since they are from the same squash family. Ryan happens to be there, so I mention this fact to him. He takes a whiff and agrees that it smells like pumpkin. Ryan happens to be the biggest pumpkin pie fanatic on the planet, so I suggest “Hey, maybe I should make a spaghetti squash pie for dessert? Whaddaya think?” His response, after a couple of seconds of thought:

“That is freaky on so many levels.”

Recommendations for you

I’ve only bought a couple of things on amazon.com, since I mainly use amazon.ca. When it gives me recommendations, they’re based only on a few things and are therefore rather diverse:

  • A book called Understanding IPv6
  • a couple of CCNA guides (I had to look up what CCNA meant – it’s some kind of networking certification)
  • 101 Dalmations DVD
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars DVD (which I have, though amazon.com doesn’t know this)
  • Tool’s Ænima CD (which I also have)
  • Slayer’s Reign in Blood CD

I imagine that there aren’t many lists of anything that both Reign in Blood and 101 Dalmations are a part of.

Sushi IS for dummies?

We were in a bookstore yesterday, when I saw a book in the ubiquitous “… for Dummies” series called “Sushi for Dummies”. Ryan saw it and said that a friend of his liked sushi. I asked “You know who else likes sushi?”, expecting him to say “who?”, at which point I’d say “me”, but his response made me laugh:

“Dummies, I suppose.”

The New OS from Micro-apple

I recently started using sitemeter.com to measure stats on my blog — which pages are read, where people came from (the vast majority from google searches), how long they stay, stuff like that. Sitemeter can also give you information on each visit, like what kind of browser was being used, what OS, even what screen resolution. But this one puzzled me:

What exactly is “Macintosh WinXP”?

The planet’s really bad now because of the Dark Side

For any Star Wars fans out there, like me, this video really made me laugh. It’s a video of someone who hasn’t seen Star Wars (“I’ve seen bits of it”) telling the story of Star Wars. Her retelling of it is very funny, but the animation is priceless.

Buzzword overload

There’s a question on StackOverflow about the best source code comments people have seen or written. My favourite answer is this one, which doesn’t require any programming knowledge to understand, since it’s impossible to understand anyway. I found it quite hysterical:

/**
This method leverages collective synergy to drive "outside of the box" thinking and formulate key objectives into a win-win game plan with a quality-driven approach that focuses on empowering key players to drive-up their core competencies and increase expectations with an all-around initiative to drive down the bottom-line. I really wanted to work the word "mandrolic" in there, but that word always makes me want to punch myself in the face.
*/

Nothing about “solutioning”, though; perhaps it’s out of date. I’d never heard the word “mandrolic” before, so perhaps I’m out of date.

Gail has on occasion actually used some of these words, particularly “synergy” and “solutioning”, and doesn’t understand why I laugh every time. I have an idea what it “means”, or what it’s supposed to mean, but to me, “synergy” is just the quintessential buzzword that doesn’t actually mean anything.

It’s all in the name

I was looking on amazon.com for a link to a book called “Fire in the Valley”, which I once bought from a bargain bin for about $5. It’s the history of the PC — starting with the Altair in the 70s and continuing with the emergence (and sometimes subsequent failure) of Apple, Microsoft, and various other tech companies. Very interesting book. I found the link here, but the amazon search also found another book with a similar title: “Fire in the Valley: Female Genital Massage“. Not the same book.
